What is a dental implant?

Most dental implants are made of titanium.  They are surgically placed into the jawbone to hold permanent replacement teeth or dentures.  Through a process called “osseointegration,” the jawbone grows around the implant over time, providing tremendous stability.  Once the jawbone has firmly healed around the implant, usually around 3-4 months, a small post called an abutment is attached to each implant.  The abutment protrudes through the gumline and serves as an anchor for the replacement tooth crown.  After the gums have healed, the replacement teeth or dentures are securely attached to the posts.
